Information about camping and camping holidays in Bretignolles sur Mer, the Vendee, western France

Bretignolles lies 6 or 7 km south of St Gilles Croix de Vie on the D38 and the town has been involved in the camping scene for many years now. Getting there is easy enough assuming you are travelling down from the direction of St Malo, then just follow the signs for the next major town or city; Rennes, Nantes where you pick up the Nantes peripherique or ring road. Head Ouest (west) and follow signs for Bordeaux, getting off the peripherique at junction 48 and about 1.5 km later you take the D178 (117) signed for Challans.

This part of the Atlantic coast is called Cote de Lumiere, and the special area of coastline which Bretignolles faces is called the Corniche Vendéenne. The beach at Bretignolles isn't as sandy as most others in the Vendee but who needs all that sand when there are loads of superb stones and pebbles just ripe for jewellery making or painting?

There is another beach to the south called La Normandalière which offers really good rock-pooling at low tide but if you are swimming there then don't forget the rocks if you're swimming at higher tide as they can be quite a hazard.

The area certainly doesn't lack camping facilities and camping sites abound, and anything from take your own tent camping to mobile home holidays are available.

The town of Bretignolles is small and extremely pleasant, very cheerful and it has shops, cafes and restaurants where you can sit and watch the world go by. After all, you are on holiday here so there's no need to rush around!
