Information about camping and camping holidays in Brittany, North Western France.

Well, at least Brittany is easy to get to from the UK. Pick the right ferry and it will deliver you to the doorstep. The two main ferries which serve Brittany are from several of our Southern ports to St Malo and Roscoff which is at the far Western end of the Department. I much prefer the St Malo ferry personally because if there is any bad weather at all you are most certainly going to hit it on the Roscoff route. Please have a look at the Brittany map for more detail.

The roads are excellent, as you would expect for French roads, and driving along them you may idly wonder where a good proportion of our EU contributions go to, because one thing is for sure and certain and that is that the French haven't paid for them by all on their own! Having said that, it is a delight to drive on uncluttered roads with roadworks few and far between.

Camping sites are dotted all over Brittany; there are so many that it would be difficult to stick a pin in a map and not hit an area noted for camping holidays. There is a mass of history in the area too, and if you get talking to a lifelong Breton you may well discover that they (the Bretons) don't think a great deal about the rest of the French as a whole. This may have something to do with Napoleon and his murderous policies in Brittany a couple of hundred years ago. If you take a camping holiday in Brittany then seeing the Megaliths or standing stones (thousands of them) near Carnac is a must. We shall be covering this in the Carnac page, but these stones have been there for several thousands of years and even though there are various explanations for them being there nobody really knows the reason for them. One thing for certain is that they weren't placed there overnight!

The Brittany coastline is both rugged and beautiful at the same time with rocky beaches featuring on most people's holiday snaps. In fact, some areas of the Southern Brittany coast are so rocky and dangerous that swimming is banned altogether - there are signs so don't worry about it. In any case, if you want a swim then every camping site has a pool these days, and some even have two - in and outdoor.
