The Atlantic coast is the most popular area for camping in the whole of France

In fact that is slightly incorrect as it is not really an area or a region but the whole of the coastline from Brest, the most westerly point of Brittany right down the southwest coast to the French/Spanish border on the western side of France.

Not many people use the term "Bay of Biscay" these days but that is precisely what the sea off the western coast is called in general, and it stretches as aforesaid from Brest in the north west and down the coast past Quimper, Lorient and St Nazaire, the whole of the Vendee and Charente Maritime, La Rochelle, Royan and Bordeaux, which is really just a tad inland.

Still going southwards it incorporates the coastline from Arcachon to Biarritz and St Jean de Luz in the very south west, the area which the French call the Golfe de Gascogne.

The whole coastline is dotted with woods, forests and lakes, small towns and villages, larger towns geared for tourism and farmland too, and there are protected dunes all the way round the coastline from as far north east as Calais.

The people who live up and down the Atlantic coast of France depend to a great extent on visitors taking camping holidays there, which necessitates them employing staff, and of course there is a spin off because the visitors buy from local shops and businesses which again helps them be employers. Visitors and holidaymakers mean big money over a season.

So when we have bad years, recession years such as 2009 and 2010 to date as well, then everyone suffers because the visitors are so thin on the ground, not because camping is expensive at all but mainly because the £ pound and the € Euro are worth pretty much the same due to the failures of the last Labour Govt, and all this encourages people to holiday out of the Euro zone.
