Information about camping and camping holidays in Carnac, South West Brittany

Carnac by the sea; a lovely town and a superb place for holidays of any flavour, camping or otherwise. Carnac is in the south west of Brittany, and though it may look a fair distance from any of the main French ports it is easily accessible, especially from Caen which is about 199 miles and St Malo about 114, the next best being Cherbourg, about 217 miles away and Roscoff about 129.

Driving from St Malo (or Caen because you will then be on the same road) you will soon pick up the sign for Vannes which is the nearest major city east of Carnac. Follow the Vannes until you see the signs for Carnac. Easy!

Carnac town lies at the mainland end of the Quiberon peninsula, an extremely pleasant little place with a nice sandy beach and a promenade. Our link shows you a map of the area. The area lends itself to camping and mobile home holidays, and indeed, there are quite a few sites for just that in the immediate area. This is a place that is safe for families with small children too.

You may or may not be into sightseeing; you may or may not have a sense of history when you come across something old, but you simply cannot fail to be overawed when you see even a fraction of the Alignments (standing stones), or Megaliths very near to Carnac. There are thousands of them and nobody is 100% sure why they were placed there, or even who actually placed them there, but certainly they have been in place for several thousand years.

Like lots of holiday towns these days, Carnac has a small train which takes you round the town and all the bits and pieces of interest in the immediate area, and it is impossible to miss some of the Alignments (standing stones) on this trip. Of course you can hop off at any of ther stops, and back on again at a stop when the train comes round again. It doesn't cost much but a ride on this little train will show you so much that you may have missed seeing on your own.

Another cheap way of getting around the town is to hire a bike at one of the many outlets at Carnac-Plage. You can hire anything there from the standard mountain bike to a full family four wheeler. The locals are well used to these so there is little danger of an accident, but they are so useful for getting around and handier than taking the car because most of the sights you need to see are within about 3 miles of the town.
