Information about camping and camping holidays in the Dordogne region of Aquitaine, South Western France
The Dordogne département is situated within the Aquitaine region of the southwest corner of France. Most French people refer to the area as the Périgord, which is what it used to be called before the French revolution; the region changed its name to the Dordogne in 1790.
There must be something about the Dordgogne region which attracts the British because it has one of the largest communities of ex pat Brits anywhere in France; not surprising really because the French people of that region have always harboured a soft spot for the English. Combine that with the most excellent weather, a wonderful array of Dordogne foody specialities and there's no wonder we flock there to settle in droves. We have linked to a map of the region so that you can take in the whole area at a glance.
There are some well known, even famous towns and cities in the Dordogne, Bergerac, Sarlat and Bourdeaux of course, around which you will find many camping sites. The river Dordogne, a tourist attraction in it's own right flows past Bordeaux.
Getting to the Dordogne is so easy it's untrue. If you drive from Le Havre, Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo then all you have to do is to follow the signs for Bordeaux, turning off to your designated destination when you get near the city.
It is true that the populaation of westernDordogne is pretty sparse and centred around Bordeaux, either within the city or it's nearby towns, and it is near to these towns where the bulk of the camping areas are.
If you are into surfing in a big way then this is the area for you. The rollers here are world class and so it follows that world class surfers follow them. Certainly this area must offer the best surfing in Europe.
Generally the Dordogne area has plenty to occupy anyone going there on a camping or mobile home holiday, and apart from the surfing there is a mass of history to explore dating from pre-historic man to the present day to satisfy the needs of anyone wanting less physical activities.
