Information about camping and camping holidays in South West France

If you type south west France map into a search engine then more often than not it will start as far north as Nantes which is in the Vendee, and not really south west at all. In my book Charentes is the northenmost point where I consider the south west to be, Aquitaine, Dordogne etc and right down past Bordeaux, Bayonne and Biarritz to it's southernmost point where France meets the Spanish border just south of Biarritz, the Pyrenees Atlantiques in effect, but we have included a link to a decent map which will give you a good idea.

The south west region of France has masses and masses of camping sites which all offer superior services and accommodation. The area has climates as good as anywhere in France for camping holidays though the further south you go near to the Pyrenees the more linkely you are to experience some wet weather at any time of the year due to the clouds hitting the mountain peaks and dumping their water on holidaymakers.

Getting there is easy too. Possibly the best ferry ports to sail into for this trip are Caen or St Malo, and both have fast dual carriageway/autoroute access to the south west. Of course there are other ferry ports to consider such as Le Havre and Cherbourg though this last is a good distance further on a slow road until you meet the dual carriageway south. If you are booking your camping holiday though a travel operator then they will undoubtedly giver you the Dover/Calais return ferry in the cost of your holiday and if you opt for one of the other ports nearer the south then there will be an extra charge. It is certainly worthwhile delving into these extra charges because you will most certainly save some travelling time and you will also certainly save money on fuel costs. Only you can work out how much the extra ferry costs you and how much you will save in fuel.

Surfing as well as camping is one of the highlights of the area for active holidaymakers and there are a great many really excellent surfing beaches in the south west of France for both expert surfers and body surfers as well. They get the tide charts and trun up from all over Europe when the "surf is up" so that they can get a good weekend's surfing in.

We are covering other areas of the south west on different pages such as Dordogne, Aquitaine, Bordeaux area with the River Gironde running through to the sea, Aquitaine and the Biarritz area down to the Spanish Border. In time we will be filling out these sections with the actual camping towns and villages.
