Information about camping in and around Nice in the south of France, the 5th largest city in the country. The same Nice is also in Provence, the Cote d'Azur and also on the French Riviera as our link to the map will show.
Getting to Nice from Calais is a complete doddle even if it's a longish journey; Just get onto the A26 autoroute and belt straight down the page following the signs for the major cities: Reims, Troyes, Dijon, Macon and Lyon where you could branch off and take the road through Grenoble and down to Nice, or you could carry on the autoroute past Avignon and Aix-en-Provence to Nice via the scenic route. You don't need a map until you get near to your camping site. If you follow signs for the major cities it's virtually impossible to get lost!
What will you find when you get there? Well your camping site won't actually be in Nice, it will be on the outskirts or in the near vicinity, but you should have received immediate directions to the campsite from your booking agent or tour operator.
Nice is busy, believe it, so there are two things you can do if you are driving there: 1) is to take advantage of the Park & Ride scheme which is usually highly efficient and cheap throughout France, or 2) find and book a parking space in the city through Interparking. I have no idea what the latter option costs but I do know that Park & Ride in France is normally far cheaper than ordinary parking is in the UK. Bus times vary but every 20 mins is normal.
Your camping site is most likely to have a pool and of course that's very nice, but nothing beats the sea air or the atmosphere of the beach and surrounding area. Get a decent inflatable sunbed and float out into the Med to wind down.
Nice is tres expensive. The area around Nice is also tres expensive and you should be well aware of this before booking a camping holiday there or anywhere on the Cote d'Azur. This region has always had a higher cost of living than any other high profile camping holiday area in France, but the good thing is that your camping holiday in or near to Nice costs no more than any other area in the country, so you can have the most excellent holiday there provided you realise beforehand that it will entail extra costs for things listed below:
Using the autoroute to your camping site and back to Calais.
A night's accommodation each way is recommended.
Extra fuel for the journey - roughly 1400 + miles return
Eating/drinking out - take out a loan for this!
