Information about Lacanau Ocean as a holiday resort and camping resources in and around the immediate area
Getting to Lacanau Ocean is an absolute doddle and if you follow these directions you should be able to get to the resort from your ferry port without even looking at a map. We must assume at this stage that you aren't going to use up half your holidays driving, even though this is a great little driving holiday venue, so we assume that you will not be using Calais as your chosen ferry port.
Travelling from Le Havre and Caen then you have a choice of going south to Le Mans past Angers and Cholet to join the A83 autoroute and down to the Bordeaux périphérique (ring road). Once on that head for St Medard and then Lanacau Ocean. Easy.
However, I prefer a different route if travelling from Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo and head straight for Rennes. You skirt the city and follow signs for Nantes. This is the only place you could get lost so listen up: You need to get onto the Nantes périphérique and you will only see one sign for that and it is at the side of the road marked Nantes périphérique 4 km. Don't miss it! If you miss the turn you have to waste time driving through the city. The sign to follow is Bordeaux and you will get off the périphérique at junction 48, still following signs for Bordeaux until you actually get to the périphérique for Bordeaux.
Once there the directions are the same as if you have come from Le Havre, and you have a choice of leaving the périphérique at junctions 7 or 8 to take you there.
Virtually all the coastal area from the mouth of the river Gironde right down to the French/Spanish Border is forested and the beaches seem to stretch on and on for ever.
30 miles west of Bordeaux, Lacanau-Ocean sits on a 12 mile stretch of wide sandy beach where huge waves crash to the shore. Make no mistake, this area is great for camping holidays but it is also superb for Surfing and bodyboarding. The coast around the south west of France was custom made for surfers and watersports lovers in general. Every year, Lacanau organises the LACANAU PRO, which is an official stage of the surfing world championship.
Camping sites? They are all over the Lacanau area.
