Information about camping holiday facilities in the Pornic area, southern Brittany

Pornic, like many other camping areas is only a small place, and again like others the camping facilities are out of town. Getting there is easy just as easy as anywhere in France which thankfully has excellent road signing. Assuming that your approach is from the north then you will at some stage get to the city of Nantes. Don't do through Nantes if you can help it, even though it is a nice city, you need to get onto the Nantes peripherique or ring road and initially head Ouest (west) following signs for Bordeaux. Exit the peripherique at junction 52 and follow signs for Bouaye and Pornic on the D751. Tis a doddle.

Now even though Pornic and the surrounding area is ripe for camping the town itself it tres upmarket as a look in any estate agents window will show. The house prices there are pretty steep I may tell you! Apart from that it is a delightful town with ample inexpensive parking and usually something going off in one of the car parks, singers, dancers and the like. The town is dominated by a huge chateau perched on rock overlooking the small harbour there as my photo shows.

Part of the town is at river level where there are lots of small shops, bars and restaurants, and also one of the largest and most pristine clean ice cream shops in France. There is another part to the town which is just as charming and that is up the hill where the town seems to stop at the Tabac.

If you are a thrill seeking family then the St Nazaire bridge over the river Loire is just the ticket for you. It must rate as one of the steepest hump backed bridges in the country, if not the world, and if you don't like heights then get into the overtaking lane or you will be looking straight down a couple of hundred feet directly into the river. I'll forgive you if you feel a tad queasy at that point but the whole experience makes some terrific photos.

There are beaches at Pornic, the Plage des Sablons and the Plage Mombeau to name just a couple, and there are stacks of small towns and villages which have facilities for tent camping, take your own tent camping and mobile home holidays. Indeed, the Pornic area is custom made for enjoyment and a wonderful camping holiday.
