Camping holidays in and around Quimper which is in Finisterre, Brittany and roughly 20 KM from the southern Brittany coast
Quimper lies along the banks of the river Odet, and is the ancient capital of la Cornouaille, the name given to this region by the ancient Celts who fled here from Cornwall. Probably this gives some credence to the supposed fact that old Cornish and old Breton languages are very similar, to the point we are led to believe, that people who are Cornish born and bred can understand the Bretons and vice versa. Strangely enough, there are plenty of references to King Arthur and his knights which is as much part of folklore here as in Britain.
Camping apart, Quimper has always been famous for pottery; the H.B. Henriot workshops are there and can be visited during weekdays. This is a plethora of historical bits and pieces in Quimper including the cathedral with it's distinctive twin spires, the building of which started in 1239.
For a camping holiday near to Quimper you would be best using one of the nearer ferry ports like St Malo or Roscoff, but Cherbourg, Deauville or Le Havre would do because you would be driving on either autoroutes or fast dual carriageways nearly all of the time.
From St Malo just get onto the N137 d carriageway to Rennes and you will soon pick up signs for Vannes and Quimper, so simply follow them. From Le Havre, Deauville and Cherbourg initially get onto the A13 to Avranches and Rennes. You will be directed onto the ring road at Rennes, so head Ouest (west) and get off the R road at junction 10 to Ploermel, Lorient and Quimper. Tis easy! Other than that you can fly to Quimper airport at Pluguffan and hire a car from there.
Quimper is not by the sea so there is no beach. However, it is not far from quite a few seaside resorts like Benodet which is directly south, Concarneau and Beg-Meil are also very near, about 16 KM away which is about 10 miles. If you like water and don't want to travel to the coast then there is a lake due south of Quimper for you to potter about in called Baie de Kerogan.
Camping is a way of life here and there are camping sites which offer anything from pitches for you to erect your own tent to pre-erected tents which come fully kitted out with cooker, fridge/freezer, beds and utensils. Finally, the most popular camping holidays these days are in mobile homes which are much more luxurious and which have toilets and showers as standard.
