Camping holidays in and around Sarlat in the Dordogne or Périgord region of France

Most people only associate a very few names with the Dordogne and they are Sarlat, Bergerac and Périgord which is the French name for Dordogne which ia a department of Aquitaine. You associate Sarlat more with holidays and the amount of Brits who have emigrated to the area to retire in far better surroundings than they were used to in the UK.

Sarlat is a medieval town with many golden sandstone buildings which are often used in film sets, and no wonder, because this place is one of the most picturesque towns in France. Sarlat was virtually destroyed in the Hundred Years war, but it was rebuilt in the 15th century and beautifully restored in the 1960’s.

Sarlat and it's surrounding area is a haven for camping holidays and camping sites abound here for take your own tent holidays where you just rent the pitch and use your own equipment, to pre-erected tents which come fully kitted out with everything you need on a camping holiday, and of course mobile homes which have that added little luxury of a toilet and shower.

The town has masses of restaurants and bars, so many that you may wonder how they all make a living out of season because it is really a tourist town. Shop and restaurant prices don't seem out of the way here, but in 2008, 2009 and maybe next year as well we have to take into account the 30% drop in the £ Pound Sterling against the Euro and that has made every purchase expensive, even a pint in the local bar is enough to make your eyes water.

The big seller here is foie gras, and it appears that virtually every other shop is selling the stuff, and canned or fresh there seems to be an inexhaustable supply. They even sell foie gras on the market, which is on Saturday mornings by the way, and like all markets in France this is a weekly event not to be missed.

Enjoy your camping holiday in Sarlat and when you get back we may have our Blog up and running for you to tell us all about it.
