Information about camping holidays in and around Torreilles-Plage in the Languedoc-Roussillon region near to Perpignan.

While most of us have a pretty fair idea where Perpignan is, the small town of Torreilles and the even smaller resort of Torreilles-Plage would take some thinking about I'm sure. The resort of Torreilles Plage is tiny but is a great hit with the British who like to take their camping holidays there or nearby. By camping we mean mostly holidays in mobile homes where you have the added luxury of a toilet and shower, but some tour operators offer pre-erected yent hire, and they come fully equipped with cooker, cooking utensils, fridge/freezer and beds.

Torreilles is a fair old trek from the UK - probably as far as you will ever travel in France, and we make the distance from Calais to Perpignan 1136 KM or approx 710 miles, so if you are travelling by car then you will most certainly need a night's rest somewhere unless you stagger the driving.

Getting to Torreilles may be a long and drawn out affair but it is so easy because the French road signing is excellent. Assuming that you take the offer of a Dover/Calais ferry crossing which comes with nearly every holiday you book from a British tour operator, then all you have to do is to get onto the A26 outside Calais and head south following signs for the major cities along the route. Seriously, if you follow these as we have set them out here you will not need to look at a map until you nearly reach your destination.

So, from Calais follow signs for St Omer, the home of the famous lager/beer, Bethune, Cambrai, Laon and Reims. Then follow signs for Troyes and Dijon which is famous for it's mustard. After Dijon you zoom down past Chalon-sur-Saone, Macon and down to Lyon. Easy so far. Then Valence, Orange, Nimes and Montpellier to Narbonne, passing the most famous naturist resort in Europe which is at Cap d'Agde. At this stage you could either be on the A9 E15 autoroute which is payable or you may have opted for the D900 which is free.

If you are on the A9 I personally would get off there onto the D900 at junction 40 where you would leave to join the D11 at Salses-le-Chateau, which in turn takes to between the town of Toreilles and the resort on the med coast of Torreilles Plage.

When you are settled in Torreilles plage and the lure of the beach or your camping site pool have diminished you may even consider a trip out over the French/Spanish border which is quite close to where you are. If you are a smoker then fags will be cheaper in Spain, but at least you will be well placed to soak in some of the Franco/Spanish culture of the area.
